Community Cleanup along CPR railway tracks
You are invited to join volunteers of the Kirkendall neighbourhood, Canadian Pacific (CP) and GO Transit to do a cleanup of the area around the railway tracks between Chatham and Dundurn Streets. Wear sturdy shoes (safety shoes if you have them). Gloves and bags will be supplied. Strong muscles are required for the big stuff!
Here is a map
Thank you to Nancy Willson, Gail Rappolt, Nikola Wojewoda-Patti (Brian McHattie’s office), CPR and City of Hamilton staff for organizing this cleanup. Hope to see you there!
Let’s help keep Kirkendall clean!

Citizens’ Forum on Area Rating of Property Taxes

The City of Hamilton has set up a “Citizen’s Forum” to consider the implications of different tax rates for the different former municipalities in the amalgamated city. The forum invites participation of members of the public at coming meetings.
There will be two public meetings where people are invited to join the conversation. The first on September 22 at the Spectator Auditorium and the second on September 29 at Sherwood Public Library. Members of the public who wish to participate can register on the forum website or by calling 905-546-2424 x 3378.
Area rating of property tax is a complex issue. At the time of amalgamation, fire, transit, and culture and recreation were assessed differently in each of the former municipalities to reflect different levels of service and historic tax rates. Since that time, access to services has become increasingly harmonized – particularly in the urban areas of the former suburbs. In August of 2008, Council directed staff to review the current area rating model and report back on options.
At the November 24, 2009 Committee of the Whole, staff presented their report, which recommended that certain services be area-rated according to an urban-rural model. City Council voted to refer the matter to a Citizensʼ Forum. The Forum members will be asked to consider the cityʼs options and any others put forward by the public or interest groups.
