Hess Village Special Duty Police Reports

A message from the office of Brian McHattie:

At the July 9th meeting of the Planning and Economic Development Committee, a pilot project was approved to hire two special duty police officers to patrol the neighbourhoods surrounding Hess Village from July to October 2007 on Friday and Saturday nights between 11:30 pm and 3:30 am. This proposal is a response to citizen concerns about unruly behaviour and vandalism by Hess St. bar patrons in the nearby neighbourhoods of Strathcona, Kirkendall, Durand and Central. There are already 8 special duty officers patrolling Hess Village.

This project is a partnership between the City and the police. The City is paying for the police officers and the police are providing the cars for the two officers.

We have now started to receive reports, which we will be forwarding to you on a regular basis. This email will be followed by the reports that we have received to date. It will include a report about Hess Village itself as well as a report from the Mobile Patrol. The program started on the weekend of July 13-14.

The Police will be looking for your feedback about the effectiveness of this project, so if you are normally affected by Hess Village behaviour, please keep track of whether this project is making a difference.

Please note that the Kirkendall Neighbourhood Association will not be posting these regular reports from the police. If you wish to receive these reports, you should sign up for Brian McHattie’s email updates here.
